A day by day drawing challenge

There are many reasons as to why I decided to get my act together and finally create a website of my own: one being that I'm currently working in Denmark, and another being that I am finally getting back into drawing - a long lost hobby of mine.

Although I won't be talking about my experience of Denmark in this post - which trust me, will come at a later date - I will be talking about a drawing challenge that I recently starting doing.

I think one of the many reasons that I stopped drawing is because I always felt really uninspired, and also felt as if it wasn't related to my university studies; so any time I spent doing it was time wasted not doing anything journalistic.

However, it's something that I have always missed doing and have always so desperately wanted to get back into. And after having re downloaded Pinterest and having a browse through, I came across so many monthly drawing challenges that I felt inspired by.

I did beat myself up a bit, thinking that once I'm back at university it would stop again, but this was the exact reason for this website. I may not draw everyday - as I am currently with this challenge - but I can still use this skill to write something in a blog post that will hopefully inspire others.

So for the drawing challenge itself it's pretty self-explanatory: for every drawing challenge, each day you are given a theme, by which you are to draw something you feel relates to that. I liked the idea of this because it gave me the motivation to get up and draw something each day, and also I never felt as if I was lacking inspiration to draw because there was always a theme there to keep the creative juices flowing through my brain.

I did start one at an earlier date, but after properly reading through the list of themes that were planned I realised that it was going to push me creatively in any shape or form - so I decided to opt out for another challenge that I pinned. I will still include images of the days that I did complete from that challenge.

The theme for the first day was 'Spice'. Very simple, but also gives you the initial thought of 'what can I do with that?'. Obviously I started brain storming generic ideas about herbs and such, but I didn't want to fall out with this challenge so quickly; so I very quickly took a different route.

My final image came out like this:

I know a lot of people will look at this and think 'what on earth has that got to do with spice?', but there's thought behind it, I promise.

I've heard the term 'spice' used to describe someone as attractive, or sultry, and since I prefer to draw people I thought I'd go with something along those lines.

I also thought to use the colour red to connote 'hotness', like - to point out the very obvious - how some spices can be hot in flavour. And of course the added chilli to tie in with that.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with the outcome: there are a few things I'd change, and of course things I am disappointed with. What's hard is having the thought in the back of your head that you used to be so much more skilled at this, but it's the price I have to pay for giving it up for so long; at least now I'm back on track with it.

I'll keep you updated with further attempts at the challenge, and if you'd like to have a go to, I'll leave a link to the pin on Pinterest below.

Until next time.
